Bennett was a 15th round draft pick of the USFL Jacksonville Bulls in 1982. After his release from the Bulls, Bennett had a tryout with the NFL Dallas Cowboys before coming to the CFL as a free agent signing by Winnpeg in March, 1985. Bennett spent three very successful years in Winnipeg from 1985 to 1987. He was a Western All-Star and CFL All-Star in 1986 and an Eastern All-Star and CFL All-Star in 1987 (Winnipeg had switched divisions with the folding of Montreal). In 1987, Bennett led the CFL with a most impressive total of 13 interceptions. As a free agent, Bennett took his talents back to the NFL for three seasons (1988-1990) with the San Diego Chargers. After his release by the Chargers, Bennett signed with Edmonton for the 1991 season and was released in April of 1992.
